Mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are toxic substances which are formed by mold. These fungi can be found on various kinds of crops. They occur on the field, during storage or transport. The most important mycotoxins are: aflatoxins, deoxynivalenol, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, zearalenone, patulin and T-2 toxin.

According to the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation) more than 25% of the world's agricultural production is contaminated with mycotoxins. This equates to economic losses estimated at $923 million annually in the US grain industry alone. More than 100 countries have in the meantime adopted regulations to limit exposure to mycotoxins. The acute and chronic impact of mycotoxins on human and animal health has been scientifically proven. Mycotoxins have a toxic, carcinogenic and immunosuppressive effect.
